Landscapes Internal (1999)

From a woman on her own who could fly from one countries landscapes to explore another’s that physical boldness changed in a matter of months at the end of 1999: illness and disability happened that quickly to the artist. In these works she used the photography she had taken during her journeys around England and United States to construct new landscapes expressing deeper meaning. Her photomontage ‘No Petrol?’ created a landscape in a foreign country seeking fuel for a vehicle and finding none, a landscape and predicament the artist found herself and her body dealing with the fatigue which accompanied her new unknown illness at that time. Her prayers to nature in ‘A Woman’s Prayer & Red Prayer’ both sense a storm that is growing and her exposure to a nature she has no control over. Her drawings use imaginary trees to show a history traced and sculpted by annual seasons that come and go; the weathering of a soul.

WORLD WITHIN

DRAWN WITHIN

The symbolism of trees entered my bloodstream as far back as I can remember, maybe it seeped in when as child horseback riding in the ancient forest predating Henry II: Once known at the Royal Epping Forest edging the outskirts of the East End of London where I was born. An enclosing forest housing trees fit more for a sculpture garden than hidden away by the many in an environment where history could be smelled. Trees bear witness to the life they have succumbed over many years and so to do my trees speak to the nature they have known and grown.
